FAQ

What is NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is Australia’s first national scheme for people with disabilities. It provides funding directly to individuals to support them in gaining more independence, access to new skills, jobs, or volunteering in their community, and an improved quality of life. The NDIS also connects anyone with a disability to services in their community, including doctors, community groups, sporting clubs, support groups, libraries, and schools. The NDIS supports over 500,000 Australians with disabilities, including approximately 80,000 children with developmental delay.
The NDIS is implemented by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA), which is an independent statutory agency. The NDIA provides information and referrals, links to services and activities, individualized plans, and where necessary, funded supports to people over a lifetime. It also helps empower and inform people with disabilities to be confident consumers and provides service providers with clarity and transparency so they can grow their business and respond to need.
To be eligible for the NDIS, individuals must meet certain criteria, and the final decision about eligibility is up to the NDIA. If eligible, individuals can ask to become a participant by completing an Access Request Form. Once eligible, the next step is creating an NDIS plan, which outlines the individual’s goals, aspirations, and support needs.
The NDIS takes a lifetime approach, investing early in people with disabilities and children with developmental delay to improve their outcomes later in life. The NDIS launched in July 2013, after years of discussion about the need for a major reform of disability services in Australia.

How To Apply For NDIS?

To apply for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) in Australia, you can follow these steps:

  1. Check if you are eligible: You can visit the Am I eligible page on the NDIS website to complete an NDIS checklist and see if you might be eligible.
  2. Make a verbal application: You can apply to the NDIS by calling 1800 800 110 to make a verbal application. We will ask for the same information as the application form. You will be asked to confirm your identity and/or a person’s authority to act on your behalf, questions about providing consent to apply for the NDIS, and about getting information from third parties.
  3. Complete an Access Request Form: You can apply to the NDIS by completing an Access Request Form. You can download the Access Request Form, call or email and ask the NDIA to send you the form, or collect a form from your local area coordinator, early childhood partner, or NDIA office.
  4. Provide evidence of your eligibility: You or your authorized representative will need to give the information and any documents needed to confirm your identity and decide if you’re eligible. You will also need to sign or certify the NDIS application.
  5. Wait for a decision: The NDIA will check your application and evidence to make sure you have provided everything. They will let you know if something is missing. Once you have provided everything, they will decide if you are eligible or ask for more information within 21 days. If you are eligible for the NDIS, you’ll also need to give them proof of your identity.

If you need help to apply, you can contact your local area coordinator, early childhood partner, or NDIA office.

What Documents Are Required To Apply For NDIS?

To apply for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) in Australia, you will need to complete an Access Request Form and provide evidence of your eligibility. The Access Request Form is available to download from the NDIS website, or you can request a copy to be sent to you by email or mail. You can also collect a form from your local area coordinator, early childhood partner, or NDIA office. The Access Request Form has two sections: Section 1 is completed by the applicant or representative, and Section 2 is completed by the treating professional. In Section 1, you will need to provide information about yourself, including your name, address, date of birth, and residency status. You will also need to provide evidence of your identity, such as a birth certificate, Australian citizenship certificate, or passport. To be eligible for the NDIS, you must also provide evidence of your disability, including the nature and impact of your disability on your daily life. You can provide evidence of your disability by attaching documents such as medical reports, assessments, or letters from your treating professionals. Once you have completed the Access Request Form and gathered all the necessary evidence, you can submit your application by email, mail, or in person to your local NDIA office. The NDIA will review your application and evidence to determine if you are eligible for the NDIS.

What Is The Process For Submitting Evidence Of Disability For NDIS Application?

To submit evidence of disability for an NDIS application in Australia, you will need to provide information about your disability and how it impacts your daily life. The evidence you provide should be recent, completed by a treating health professional who is relevant to your primary disability, and confirm your primary disability and its impacts on different areas of your life.

The specific documents required to submit evidence of disability may vary depending on whether you are applying for yourself or on behalf of a child. If you are applying for a child, you will need to provide evidence of the child’s permanent disability or developmental delay, including information on what the child’s condition is, how long it will last, and its impact on their life.

You can provide evidence of your child’s disability or developmental delay by having their treating doctor or specialist complete the Professional’s Report section in section 2 of the Access Request Form, the NDIS Supporting Evidence Form, or by providing copies of existing assessments and reports.

If you are applying for yourself, you will need to provide evidence of your disability, including the nature and impact of your disability on your daily life. You can provide evidence of your disability by attaching documents such as medical reports, assessments, or letters from your treating professionals.

It’s important to remember that the evidence you provide should be specific to you and your disability. The NDIS requires an outline and evidence of the specific impairment that has been diagnosed, not just the medical condition.

Once you have gathered all the necessary evidence, you can submit your application by email, mail, or in person to your local NDIA office. The NDIA will review your application and evidence to determine if you are eligible for the NDIS.
